I am a 53 year old, U.S Veteran, a Mother, Grandmother, and I was my late Father's caregiver. My Father died of liver, lung, and colon cancer. I had the honor of holding my Father, in my arms, when he passed from this life. I watched him suffer in great pain. I watched his weight diminish. I watched as he became so medicated, that he lapsed into a coma. Much of this may have been prevented, but due to our present laws, it was not. Until one has seen, first hand, the suffering of a loved one, one can not fully understand or appreciate the despair felt, when you realize that legally your hands are tied. If, it was in your power to ease one's suffering, would you? I am more than aware of the images of "fake patients" on the internet in respect to medicinal marijuana, but should others suffer, because of those who have another agenda? Please, read the post, I do not expect you to visit all the links, but read what many in the medical profession are saying about medicinal marijuana. Those that use marijuana for recreational purposes are going to continue to use it for that purpose, but allowing bills in favor of medicinal marijuana to die in committee, is only hurting law abiding citizens, who have conditions that can be helped or relieved by medicinal marijuana.
"I hope David Day will follow this thread. This is an opportunity for people to 1) post information 2) post their opinion 3) post personal experience(s) concerning medicinal marijuana. I'm hoping this will help David realize that marijuana DOES have medicinal value, at times more than conventional medications, with far less side effects.
One of the reasons I'm starting this thread is, I presently know someone who is dying from cancer, but due to State laws, he is not legally allowed to use marijuana to relieve pain, or help with appetite.
Marijuana does not have to be smoked. It can be vaporized, it can also be ingested, used sublinggually. There are a number of vaporizers on the market, such as the Volcano. Vaporized marijuana offers the same relief that smoked marijuana does, without harmful toxins. Israel, well known for it's medical and technological advances, legalized medicinal marijuana. Sheba Medical Center offers in-patients medicinal marijuana http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/sheba-offering-patients-medical-marijuana-1.3554Another interesting article (patients were given medicinal marijuana for free) states that requests for medicinal marijuana have increased so much, due to media attention and a film about the medicinal benefits, that patients may be required to pay for their medicine. http://www.jpost.com/Home/Article.aspx?id=166124
Officially, the AMA has changed it stance on medicinal marijuana, but of course they are looking at ways of making money from it via pharmaceutical products: "CSAPH REPORT 3 – USE OF CANNABIS FOR MEDICINAL PURPOSES The Council on Science and Public Health recommends that the following statement be adopted in lieu of Resolutions 910 (I-08), 921 (I-08), and 229 (A-09) and the remainder of the report be filed. Our American Medical Association (AMA) urges that marijuana’s status as a federal Schedule I controlled substance be reviewed with the goal of facilitating the conduct of clinical research and development of cannabinoid-based medicines. This should not be viewed as an endorsement of state-based medical cannabis programs, the legalization of marijuana, or that scientific evidence on the therapeutic use of cannabis meets the current standards for a prescription drug product. (New HOD Policy)" http://www.ama-assn.org/assets/meeting/mm/i-09-statements-recommendations.pdf
Here are more sites that may shed some light on the subject of marijuana as a REAL medicine, medical opinion, medical associations opinion of medicinal marijuana. http://www.sciencenews.org/view/feature/id/59872/title/Not_just_a_high http://www.genengnews.com/gen-articles/medical-marijuana-policy-catches-up-with-science/3156/ http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/12/091203222136.htm American College of Physicians http://www.acponline.org/advocacy/where_we_stand/other_issues/medmarijuana.pdf New Jersey State Nurses Association http://www.njsna.org/associations/6274/files/Resolution%20on%20Therapeutic%20Marijuana.pdf American Nurses Association http://www.nursingworld.org/MainMenuCategories/HealthcareandPolicyIssues/ANAPositionStatements/EthicsandHumanRights.aspx New York State Nurses Association http://www.nysna.org/advocacy/testimonies/med_marijuana.htm American Academy of Neurology http://journals.lww.com/neurotodayonline/Fulltext/2006/07180/Marijuana_As_Medicine__Despite_Dismissal_From_FDA,.4.aspx
"An active ingredient in the smoke of marijuana, when used at doses below those that produce psychological effects, reduces spasticity in some patients with multiple sclerosis."-JAMA Volume 241 No.23, JUNE 8, 1979
The question now is, IF you have it in your power to relieve the pain and suffering of your fellow Missourians, by sponsoring/cosponsoring a bill that would allow those suffering from serious illness/disease to grow/obtain/use marijuana (loss of income to BIG pharmaceutical companies), would you? By our Legislators lack of real concern (allowing such bills to die in committee), our Legislators are causing undue pain and suffering for their fellow human beings. Might be interesting to find out how many cancer patients died this year due to infections, and other illnesses caused by lack of nutrition (caused by loss of appetite/nausea from chemo)?"
Respectfully, Kari Anne Shulman Proud to have served, WAC, US Army
